Don't Stop Talking (to your clients)

Three quick questions for you:

 

1.  Do your piano students know your piano teaching schedule through the end of the year?

2.  Do your piano students know what is coming up in the next week in your lessons?

3.  Do your piano students know what happened last week in lessons?

 

If you answered "yes" to all three questions, stop reading.  You are a Piano Teacher Superstar.

 

If you answered "no" to any of the questions (hopefully not all?), then keep on reading my friend.  I have some tips for you.

 

Your clients need to hear from you.  Frequently.  Like all the time.

 

(And just so we are clear, the "client" isn't necessarily the student.  The client is whomever is paying for the lessons.  Like mom or dad or grandma.  Sometimes the client and the student are the same.)

 

Your clients need to know you are paying attention to them and to the business.  The more you communicate with them, the more they feel secure that things are going well.  You build goodwill, you increase your customer's satisfaction, and you generally send them the message that you know what you are doing when you communicate.  

 

Here are some tips for communicating with your clients:

 

1.  Send home a note -- either on the assignment page or a post it, or something.  Communicate what the student is doing well, what you are going to work on together next week, etc.

 

2.  Send a good ole' fashioned email -- I admit I don't do this as often as I should.  Just a quick email, touching base with your client and/or the student goes a long way in helping your clients feel cared for.  For instance, did your student do well on that impromptu flashcard drill?  Send a quick email later that night to the parent.  They will love it!

 

3.  Send out a monthly newsletter -- my students appreciate reading about things that happened in the studio in the previous month as well as getting updated information about what is coming up soon.  Also, I always have links for my policies and studio calendar so that clients never have to wonder -- the information is always right there.

 

4.  Connect on Social Media -- whether it is an Instagram account or a facebook group or whatever works for you, use it!  Pop up quick announcements or reminders.  Add a funny cartoon.  Communicate that you are looking forward to seeing your students this week.

 

Communicating with clients is relatively simple.  The problem is we just don't get around to it.  I encourage you to mark it on your calendar, or attach it to something else in your day (i.e. right after my last lesson of the day, I will send out four emails).  

 

Don't forget that your clients don't necessarily expect sophisticated communication.  But frequent communication?  Yes -- that is a win-win!  

 

Communicate frequently with your piano lesson clients.  Trust me, you will be glad you did.
